Local SEO Google Small Business

Why every small business needs a Google Business Profile

The single highest-ROI thing a local business can do online — and it takes less than an hour to set up properly.

Agency Team ·

If you run a local business and could only do one thing to improve your online presence, this would be it. Google Business Profile is free, takes under an hour to set up properly, and directly determines whether you show up when someone nearby searches for what you offer.

What it actually does

When someone searches “café near me” or “plumber in Parramatta,” Google shows a map with three businesses — called the Local Pack — above the organic results. Getting into that pack is far more valuable than ranking #1 in regular search, because it shows your address, phone number, hours, and reviews all at once.

Your Business Profile feeds that result.

The five things that matter most

Complete every field. Google rewards completeness. Business name, address, phone, website, hours, category, description — fill them all in.

Add photos regularly. Listings with photos get more clicks. Add at least 10 when you set up: exterior, interior, team, products. Then add a new one every few weeks.

Choose the right primary category. This single field has more impact on which searches you appear for than almost anything else. Be specific — “Italian Restaurant” not just “Restaurant.”

Get your first 10 reviews. Ask every satisfied customer. Send them the direct link to leave a review from your profile dashboard.

Respond to every review. Google notices engagement. Thank positive reviewers by name. Respond professionally to negative ones.

How to set it up

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account
  2. Search for your business — claim it if it already exists, or create it from scratch
  3. Verify your listing — Google usually sends a postcard with a code (takes 1–2 weeks)
  4. While you wait, complete every field you can

The ongoing habit

Spend 10 minutes a week on it: respond to reviews, add a photo, post a short update. Google treats active profiles as more trustworthy than dormant ones.
